When Lizzo presented this year’s Best New Artist awards, it was with a whole different ensemble than the one she initially wore on the red carpet. The singer had switched Balmain gowns, swapping mint green for pearlescent pink, courtesy of stylist Brett Alan Nelson. On the beauty front, the addition of three jumbo clips made for a playful accent for her cascading waist-length locks.
To prep and protect the hair, hairstylist Shelby Swain applied Matrix Total Results Miracle Creator Multi-Tasking Hair Treatment. Then she used the ghd Curve Classic Wave Wand halfway down the hair shaft to create gentle, mermaid-like waves. To keep everything in place, she used a light mist of the Matrix Total Results Miss Mess Dry Finishing Spray. As for the funky hair clips? “I got those from the Slauson Super Mall this morning,” Swain tells Vogue from over the phone. “It was random. We were discussing how she was going to wear a second look and how we could change things up, so I wanted to pick up cool pink accessories.”
“I love creating an experience and making a statement,” Swain adds. “I love to mix total glam and high fashion, with a little bit of L.A. to it, too.”
Makeup artist Alexx Mayo was responsible for Lizzo’s flawless complexion. “I wanted to contrast the softness of the Balmain gown with a striking Smokey feline shape, kissable soft lips, and a statement lash,” he shares with Vogue. “The KISS Matte Black lashes helped me achieve maximum glam and depth around her lashes,” he says, adding that the Charlotte Tilbury Diva Lights Palette and Rock n Kohl black liner worked to further accent the eyes.
Lizzo’s dress and hair accessories weren’t the only pops of pink. Her manicure stayed on theme thanks to celebrity nail artist Eri Izhizu, who applied a mix of OPI’s GelColor in “Suzi Calls the Paparazzi” and OPI GelColor in “Not So Bora-Bora-ing Pink.”
All in all, the moment seems likely to provide spring beauty inspiration. “I love doing glam for award season because it’s like playing dress up,” Mayo notes. “Next thing you know, you started the next big trend!”
