The government may be shut down, but the arts never quit. Seattle Symphony and Seattle Opera are stepping up to make sure federal workers being furloughed can at least be entertained during these trying times, with both organizations offering free tickets.

The Seattle Symphony is offering up to four complimentary tickets for families of federal employees. There’s no specific performance slated for the tickets; instead, furloughed workers can choose (subject to availability) from the Symphony’s Masterworks Season, Seattle Pops series, Untuxed series, [untitled] series, Baroque and Wine series, In Recital series, Chamber series, Fluke/Gabelein Organ Recitals, Family Concerts, and Tiny Tots Concerts. To claim seats, federal workers simply need to call the Benaroya Hall box office (206-215-4747) before February 1 and present their government ID when picking up the tickets.

“Federal employees devote their careers serving the greater nation,” said Seattle Symphony President and CEO Krishna Thiagarajan in a press release. “At a time when they are being asked to make sacrifices, we hope our small gesture can help alleviate some of the burdens they and their loved ones are experiencing.”

Federal workers can also receive two free tickets to Seattle Opera’s performance of Il trovatore. The available performances are the 7:30 p.m. shows on Saturday, Jan. 20 and Wednesday, Jan. 23 or the 2 p.m. matinee on Sunday, Jan. 20. To claim the seats, employees must present their federal government ID at the McCaw Hall box office within two hours of the stated performances.

“We at Seattle Opera are grateful for all that our federal workers do, and wish to show our solidarity and thanks by inviting them to enjoy a night of beautiful music at McCaw Hall,” Seattle Opera General Director Aidan Lang said in a press release.
