The movement by activists to save The Showbox from being torn down in the name of luxury apartments is far from being finished, but at least the next bureaucratic procedural step in the process will be accompanied by some excellent tunes.

At 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 19, the Seattle City Council will hold a special public hearing of the Civil Rights, Utilities, Economic Development & Arts Committee — and #SaveTheShowbox Seattleites are expected to turn out en masse to share their stories and testify about what the famed music venue means to them.

But before, during, and after the committee meeting, Seattle City Councilmember Kshama Sawant has organized a free concert and rally featuring some of Seattle’s best local acts from 4-8 p.m. at City Hall Plaza. The lineup includes Dude York’s rocking power pop, bastion of sunny hip-hop Sol, psychedelic soul sister SassyBlack, hooky indie grinder Ruler, Smokey Brights’ vintage pop, and air-tight indie rock from Spirit Award. Whether you need some pump-up music before speaking in front of the council or couldn’t care less about The Showbox and just want to check out some great local music for free, it’s a slate that’s worth the trip to City Hall tomorrow.
